HOUSTON – The Los Angeles Chargers put themselves in a hole early, when Quarterback Jack Kemp fumbled the ball away on the opening play of the game. Four plays later, the Houston Oilers led 7-0.

After two weeks of play, the Chargers are 0-2 and Kemp’s performances have critics itching to have the twenty-five-year-old from Occidental College benched for the more experienced Bob Clatterbuck. Clatterbuck spent four years with the New York Giants of the NFL backing up Don Heinrich and Charlie Conerly. But coach Sid Gillman thinks Jack Kemp is the leader the Chargers need this season.

With a little more experience, Kemp will be one of the best quarterbacks in pro football,” said Gillman. “I’m not so sure he isn’t now.”

Kemp is coming off of two years with Calgary of the Canadian Football League.

For Los Angeles on Sunday, the Bills came due. That is to say, a couple of “Bills” (Billy Cannon and Bill Groman) were the stars of Houston’s vaunted offense. Cannon only managed 26 yards rushing, but his 91 yard kick return in the 1st quarter put the Oilers up for good. Bill Groman had a pair of long catches for touchdowns, and ended up netting 144 yards on the day.
