LA Galaxy defeated the Philadelphia Union 4-2 to claim the final Semi-Finalist spot in an exciting game.
With the loss, Philadelphia has been eliminated from the tournament and lost the opportunity to play on in the 2011 MLS mini-season to begin once this tournament is over.
The three teams to be “promoted” from this tournament will be: Colorado Rapids, San Jose Earthquakes, and DC United. Both Colorado and San Jose played in the 2010 MLS mini-season, meaning seven of the eight teams to play in the 2011 mini-season will be returning from last season.
In the last of the four quarterfinal matchups, David Beckham opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with goal on a direct free kick from just outside the 18 yard box, but Danny Mwanga equalized just nine minutes later.
Landon Donovan joined in the scoring in the 44th minute, taking a header in Area D and drilling it home. At the half the score was LA 2-1.
It appeared LA was about to break the game wide open when they scored on a penalty kick in the 48th minute and then were awarded ANOTHER penalty kick just two minutes later.
Donovan lined up and fired a perfect PK into the upper corner, but Faryd Mondragon made the save of his life to keep the game close. The only roll for Mondragon that would’ve blocked the on-target penalty was an 11, and that’s what he rolled.
The score remained 3-1 LA until they put the game away on David Beckham’s a 90’+1 goal – his second free kick goal of the night.
Not to go out quietly, however, Philly came out blazing with 3 minutes of added time left. In the final moments, Sebastian LeToux sent a lovely corner on a line into the box, and with all 10 men up, defender Danny Califf got a toe on it and directed it past Donovan Ricketts. Time was out, but the Union made it respectable.
LA Galaxy will go on to face the 13 seed, DC United, who advanced to this point in the tournament by knocking off heavy favorites FC Dallas and Sporting Kansas City.
