COLORADO 0(3) – 0(2) SAN JOSE
THE RAPIDS ADVANCE TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP!
After losing stalwart midfielder Bobby Convey in the 25th minute to a Red Card, the San Jose Earthquakes gave an heroic effort for a full 120 minutes of play in Colorado, only to fall short in a penalty kick shootout.
The Rapids won the possession battle, but San Jose’s defense (ranked a miserable ’1′) rolled many favorable outcomes throughout the course of the match, and Goalkeeper Jon Busch fought off 6 shots on goal to finish the match with a clean sheet.
Speaking of clean sheets, Matt Pickens and Colorado earned their second consecutive (having also blanked the Seattle Sounders in the Quarterfinals). In 330 minutes of play in the tournament, the Rapids have allowed only 1 goal.
The final moments of extra time were fraught with drama: in the 120th minute, Chris Wondolowski took a ball from Area D and zipped into the penalty box, firing off a shot with an “on goal” rating of 32. He rolled a 33, and the ball clanked off the crossbar, but nicked a San Jose defender on the way out of bounds for a Corner Kick.
In the final minute of stoppage time, Rafael Baca laid a perfect ball into the box for Chris Wondolowski, but the line judge’s flag was up – it was offsides and that’s how the game would end.
Wondolowski took the first PK of the shootout and missed it terribly. After 4 kicks had been taken by each side, Colorado led 3-2. Ramiro Corrales, who had played great after subbing in at the 46th minute, got too tricky with his shot and it hit the post.
Colorado wins and will face the winner of the LA Galaxy(1) versus DC United(13).
