In Memoriam: Paul Blair – centerfielder

Paul Blair 78 toppsI finished my 1977 New York Yankees C & D (Strat-O-Matic) replay yesterday. As the season progressed, I became a fan of the aging Paul Blair as time and again he flashed legendary glovework (in his career he won 8 Gold Gloves), while working as a late-inning replacement for Reggie Jackson and as a spot starter in center and right throughout the season.

Paul Blair passed away today at the age of 69. Blair was a member of four World Series Champions (1966 & 1970 Baltimore Orioles, 1977 & 1978 New York Yankees).

Here are his final stats from my replay:

  1. I was a big fan of Paul Blair. I do remember his great glove, and I also remember what a lot of the old timers used to say about the type of player Blair was. They would call them professional hitters, or professional glove men. The kind of performer who didn’t let you down, and always gave you 100%. RIP, Paul Blair…
