My favorite two words in the English language: Opening Day.
Tonight my beloved Seattle Sounders will take on Mexican side Santos Laguna for the first half of the CONCACAF Champions’ League Quarterfinal tie. It’s a huge match, one of the biggest in Sounders history.
Speaking of Sounders history, I was there at the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup final last season, when the Sounders beat Chicago Fire 2-0 to 3-peat as champions. Below is the video I took of the final minutes of the match.
Jump to about 1:27 to see the Sounders gain a possession that leads to Osvaldo Alonso’s goal. I took this video with my cell phone.
I’ve been to a lot of great sporting events, and the only other moment that came close to the elation I felt when this goal went in was at Dodger Stadium on opening day, 1999, when Raul Mondesi first hit a two-out 3 run home run in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game and send it to extra innings THEN hit his second homer of the day in the bottom of the 11th to seal the Dodger victory in a game started by Kevin Brown and Randy Johnson. On Opening Day.
