There is a ton of great soccer stuff going on today – not the least of which is the #SE4TTLE Sounders’ run at a 4th US Open Cup Championship in the final today at Livestrong Park versus Sporting Kansas City. It’s their attempt at an historic feat.
I was there last year at the final. That feeling when Osvaldo Alonso scored in the 87th minute to seal the victory might be my favorite moment of sports-related elation in my life.
I’ve posted this before, but here is the video I took with my cell phone from my seat in the end zone:
I’ll never forget that moment.
Winning again tonight will be difficult, to say the least. The one thing that the Sounders have had in their favor throughout this run of 18 straight wins over 4 years, is the fact that many of their biggest games have come in friendly environments such as Tukwila, Washington’s Starfire Sports Complex and the Sounders’ own home Century Link Field (not all, of course, but many).
The game tonight will be played at Livestrong Park, home of the Sounders’ opponents, Sporting Kansas City. It’s a beautiful stadium, less than a year old and certainly with plenty of shelf-space for a shiny new trophy. SKC hasn’t won any hardware since 2004 when they were the Wizards and under different ownership. This match will not be taken lightly.
As for me, I won’t get to see the match tonight, for a couple of reasons: first, it’s only being broadcast on GOLTV, which only comes with the Spanish Language Television Package through my cable provider, so I don’t have that channel. On just about any other night I would be at one of the many viewing parties that the club and its supporters have arranged. Unfortunately, the fall softball season began on Monday and tonight my team (the Stray Dogs), will be playing at 6:15, the same starting time as the Cup final. Rest assured, I’ll be following as soon as I get into the dugout each inning, but it just won’t be the same thing.
Good luck, Seattle! Sounders Til I Die!
